Tradition & Culture This community is basically having the tradition of gurukula school systems which is being practiced in the south-west coastal area of India (Kerala). They are also gurus (teachers) of the martial arts called Kalarippayattu (using sword) in the wars. Before the ban made by the British rule in the eighteen centuary on the kalaries and kalarippayattu, the military training school systems of kerala, had gown into a popular physical culture, for defense and offence. Regular kalaries were run in each and every village under the supervision of an Asan (Guru).Different titles like Kurup or Panicker were bestowed upon the master and people considered him a highly respected person in the village. Needles to say they are masters in Astrology and has taken the profession as Astrologers and renowned Astrologers are from this community.
